Chapter 15 - Painful Truth

ARBIN AWOKE TO THE sound of someone banging on the front door. The light in the room told him it was well before noon. “Again? Doesn't anyone sleep in around here?”

Arbin turned on his side, winced at the pain, then rolled over to the other side. As he did, he heard something heavy hit the floor. Arbin rolled back over and, using his good elbow as support, peeked over the edge of the couch. On the floor was a large book. Oh, I forgot about that, he thought. When he got home, he was so upset about seeing the killer that he could not relax. He decided the best way to relax was to do some reading and found the diary of Casandra's father and grandfather. He did not remember how far he had gotten, but it did the trick of getting him to sleep.

The door banged again. This time with a little more urgency. “Masimo!” Arbin shouted. “There is someone at the door for you.” This was not his home, so it only made sense that it was for Masimo.

The third knock was more of a pounding followed by a voice saying, “Masimo Vinetti, open the door! We have an urgent message from Captain Eustace.”

See, Arbin thought. It is for Masimo. He rolled back over on the couch and thought about sleeping, but there was something familiar about that voice. Arbin gave one last shout for Masimo as he sat up and made his way slowly to the door. He opened it and found Hans and two other Shadow Guards standing there.

“Hans!” said Arbin with a smile, “You miss me?”

“Funny,” said Hans. “Get Masimo. It's important. Tell him we are waiting outside for him.”

Arbin nodded and closed the door. That felt kind of good, he thought, and walked back toward the couch just as Masimo was coming down the stairs. He was wearing a dark blue robe and slippers. “It's for you,” said Arbin. “It's Hans. He said it’s important.”

“Who?” asked Masimo through a yawn.

“Shadow Guard with an important message from Captain Eustace,” said Arbin.

“This early?” asked Masimo.

“My thoughts exactly,” said Arbin as he flopped back down on the couch.

Arbin heard Masimo and Hans talking, but did not put any effort into listening to what they said. As Masimo made his way back toward his room, Arbin glanced his way and was a little taken back by Masimo's expression. He looked white as a ghost. Arbin propped himself up and asked, “Everything okay?”

Masimo did not pause but said, “Don't know. I need to go. I might be gone for a while.”

Arbin said, “Okay,” and laid back down, but the expression on Masimo's face bothered him.

Masimo returned a few minutes later, but he was not his smartly dressed, cheerful self. He walked past Arbin and out the door, saying nothing else.

Hum, that was weird, Arbin thought as he rolled over on the side that was not hurting him as much and pulled the blanket back up round himself.
